This woodland retreat started life as just that -- a getaway with summer cottages for 1920s San Franciscans eager to escape the cold of the city's fog.
Today, Woodside Highlands retains its open feel, beginning at Portola Road with Santa Maria Road winding up and around to the Hayfields pastures. Many of the homes, situated on 1/4- and-1/2-acre lots, have views of the bay or surrounding mountains and fields.
It's a country neighborhood where no two houses are exactly alike.
In his memoir about motorcycling in Portola Valley, former Woodside Highlands resident and current homeowner Russell Targ describes how he and his wife Joan dreamed of a cluster development that would also include a commercially viable organic garden to benefit the community.
After discovering an idyllic parcel rising 800 feet above the valley floor, in 1976, along with Nancy Hunt Kiesling, the Targs purchased 80 acres which they dubbed the Hayfields.
They eventually gained town approval for a planned-unit development that would allow nine homes on 28 acres, with the remaining land reserved for agriculture, or a "farm field," Mr. Targ says.
